If you’ve ever traveled with young children, you know it can be quite a challenge, especially when it comes to renting a car and having a child safety seat. Nearly every car rental company offers the option of having a child safety seat included with your car, but of course that comes at a price – normally about $10 to $15 per day. While that might not add up to all that much money on a short rental, it almost always makes sense to bring your own child seat from home. Let’s look at a few reasons why.

First off, you are going to save money on your rental car if you bring your own car seat. You are also likely to save a lot of time. Even if you reserve a car seat with the rental car company, it may not be in the vehicle when you get there, and the last thing you want to be doing with small children is waiting around. Plus, if you read the fine print, the car rental companies don’t guarantee to have enough car seats available, and you never know about the quality, safety or comfort of the car seats they have.

Another thing to remember is that most airlines do not count child car seats as baggage, so if you decide to check it as baggage you won’t have to pay the extra baggage fee, and if you want to use it on the airplane then it won’t count as a carry-on item.
